Aka "Mi-lu", the Pere David Deer was named for Armand David (1826-1900) a French Jesuit missionary and naturalist who explored China in the Nineteenth Century. Subsequently, other Europeans wanted to add this deer species (Elaphurus davidianus) to their zoological collections, including the Duke of Woburn. As it turned out, this saved them from extinction, as the Imperial herd was exterminated by rebels (against the Manchus et.al) during the Boxer Rebellion (1899), descendants of the Duke's collection were sent to other zoos, including the Bronx Zoo (where I've seen them), which was the first zoo in the nation to have them. The most distinguishing trait would be the backwards-pointing tines of the stags' antlers. Other characteristics include a tail similar to that of a horse, and broad hooves that help to keep it from sinking into the mud of their wetland habitat.

Two bull Roosevelt wapiti (Cervus canadensis roosevelti)) aka "elk" square off for dominance, unaware of the cougar (Puma concolor oregonensis) crouching behind a fallen tree, waiting to pounce of the loser of the match. If the two elk get their antlers entangled and can't disengage, it looks the big cat will get a "two-fer" to feast on for dinner.

They inhabit the western parts of North America , from Canada (into Alaska) to Mexico.
