Although the Asian Elephant's specific (scientific) name is "maximus", the species is in fact exceeded in size by the African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta africana),the largest existing land mammal. Now found wild only on the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia (as well as Sri Lanka and Indonesia), the Asian Elephant historically ranged from the Middle East to central China. They have been widely domesticated as both beasts of burden and as war animals. Both wild and captive elephants can suddenly become violent, particularly young males in "musth" (a hormonal surge), characterized by dark "tear" stains below the eyes. While tigers will prey on elephant calves, they seldom go after the adults (unless infirmed), so the only real enemy would be people.

This painting was inspired by a recent (on 6/2) incident in northeastern Thailand, where a 26-year old (give or take a year) wild bull Asiatic Elephant (Elephas maximus) named "Plai-Biang Lek" (literally meaning "ginger-avoiding little one") by the locals, went on a spree in a local grocery store, binging on snacks such as the bananas depicted in the scene. At one point he got stuck (crammed) against the low ceiling but was freed with human assistance. The damage (mostly mud stains) he did to the market was relatively minimal, estimated to be the equivalent of 30 U.S. dollars. What is "Clean-up in Aisles..." in Thai?
