20" x 30" (with 15" rhomboid vignette)

The subspecies of Plains Zebra depicted here is the Grant's Zebra (Equus burchelli boehmi) distinguished by its bold (strictly) black & white stripes (no brown "shadow" stripes as in the Chapman's Zebra, E. b. antiquorum) of the adults (juveniles have brown and white stripes), inhabiting open savannahs (grasslands) in East Africa (Tanzania & southern Kenya) where they gather in herds to both keep watch for and confuse predators (particularly lions and spotted hyenas) by the visual merging of stripes that break up the outlines of individual zebras.. Should the deception fail, zebras are well-equipped to defend themselves by kicking and biting!!! The zebras' volatile temperament has long proved to be an obstacle to domestication compared to (relatively) more docile horses and asses.

"MONGOLIAN WILD HORSES (Equus przwalskii)"
2026
Mixed Media (Ink, watercolor, tempera, color pencils) on watercolor paper
18" x 24"

Once found over much of the Steppes in Central Asia, the Mongolian Wild Horse became nearly extinct in the wild by the twentieth century, but conservation efforts have helped to re-establish them in their historic range, which includes western Mongolia, northwestern China, and parts of Kazakhstan; a total of approximately 2,500 remain. Midway in size between a Shetland Pony and a Thoroughbred, this wild horse is generally tawny with a black stripe along the back. Unlike domestic horses (including mustangs) it lacks a forelock (tuft of hair hanging down between the ears), the mane being comprised of stiff, bristle-like hairs. A related species, the Tarpan (Equus ferus) inhabited eastern Europe and western Asia, but was exterminated by the end of the nineteenth century. All domestic breeds are descended from the Tarpan, which had a tawny or slate-gray (in forested regions) coat.

"OKAPI (Okapia johnstoni)"
2025
Mixed Media (Ink, watercolor, tempera) on illustration board

The Okapi's natural home is the rainforest of the Congo Basin in Central Africa. Once (erroneously) thought to be a forest species of zebra, its closest relative is actually the Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardus), which tend to inhabit more open country such as savannah (grasslands), although both species are browsers (leaf-eaters), possessing a long, dark blue tongue, as well as horn-like growth called "ossicorns" on top of their heads.

"MUTATED (unspotted) GIRAFFE"

From reading about a zoo in Tennessee that has a Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardus reticulata) calf (born last year) that is unspotted (unlike her mother, also depicted here), just a solid reddish brown (off-white on the underbelly and inner sides of legs), truly a very rare occurrence!

Occurring only in the southernmost part of Africa , the Quagga (a species of zebra) and Cape Lion were both exterminated in the wild by the Boers in the late 19th Century.

They're Baringo or Rothschild's Giraffes found in Uganda (near Lake Baringo). They're similar to Reticulated Giraffes (G.c.reticulatus) of (neighboring) Kenya, but are smaller (the smallest subspecies of giraffe) and have no markings on their white legs, making them look as if they're wearing stockings.
